SUBJECT: FIRE SAFETY

New emergency evacuation route signs will be installed in classrooms throughout campus over the course of the next couple of months. As these signs are posted, please take the time to review them. The signs include a solid red line to indicate the closest exit route, and a dashed red line to be considered in the event the closest route is unavailable.

AACC is currently undergoing building fire inspections conducted by the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. Fire safety is everyone's concern. Please help the college by assessing your own work area or office for the following three most common infractions of the OSHA and fire codes:

1. Extension cords are being used as permanent wiring (OSHA 1910.305) and often extension cords are plugged into other extension cords or surge protectors (a.k.a. daisy chaining). If this is the case in your office or work area, please complete a Facilities work order or Information Services request to have the need for extension cords removed.

2. Electrical panel access is blocked. Code (OSHA 1910.303) requires a three-foot clearance in front of all electrical panels.

3. Items stacked too close to the ceiling. In buildings equipped with sprinkler systems, the minimum vertical clearance between sprinklers and material below shall be 18 inches (OSHA, 1910.159).

With your help, the college will stay a fire safe work place. Thank you for your time. As always, we appreciate your comments and concerns.
