ACSDE Research Monograph No. 16 NOW AVAILABLE
"Presence at a Distance: The Educator-Learner Relationship in Distance Education "
"Authored by Jane Southwell Munro, this monograph focuses on the issue of interaction in distance education, particularly, the educator-learner relationship. Through an extensive review and analysis of the distance education research and theory on the subject, Munro develops a new model of the educator-learner relationship. This model attempts to address one of the greatest challenges of distance teaching: to create an environment in which virtual presence outweighs the reality of distance."
American Conference of Academic Deans "The fact that ACAD has chosen to remain a "conference" of deans, rather than an association, reflects a continuing dedication to its founding purpose: to create both formal and informal opportunities for deans to meet, network, and offer professional support to their colleagues in their work as academic leaders. Technology has greatly increased ACAD's effectiveness as a "conference" as members use the "deans only" electronic discussion list to solve problems, exchange views, and solicit advice from colleagues. Our new Web site should further enhance this capacity by providing membership and meeting information, a directory of members, a news and events column, and position announcements."

Commentary
Author Says Colleges Must Reallocate Money to Academic Technology (The Chronicle 2/27/01) "Reducing costs is the hardest part, at least initially. It's like retooling an industry. You have to do things differently, and there are high costs in doing that. The second reason is the amount of time that faculty have to spend learning how to use the new technology. It has to be done, but it means that people aren't doing other things like research and standing in front of a class teaching."

Distance Learning in Higher Education (PDF format) by Gary A. Berg, WebNet Journal, Oct-Dec, 2000.
"These distance learning economic models show that, perhaps, the largest changes in administrative practices in higher education, as a result of distance learning, will come in altered compensation and duties for faculty. Faculty rates of compensation and duties may be affected by either substituting labor with capital, or by substituting faculty with less expensive labor performing current faculty tasks."
Who Is Teaching In U.S. College Classrooms? -A Collaborative Study of Undergraduate Faculty, Fall 1999
"Full-time faculty are being replaced by lower paid part-time teachers attractive to higher education administrators, who are under pressure to keep costs down. In addition to receiving few if any benefits, most of these faculty members receive less than $3,000 per course (Table 4). Nearly one third of them earn $2,000, or less per course. In fields like English and history nearly half of the part-timers are in this category. At this rate of pay, part-time teachers—almost all of whom have the masters degree and many of whom have the PhD—would have to teach five courses to earn between $12,000 to $15,000 a year. They could earn comparable salaries as fast food workers, baggage porters, or theater lobby attendants. "One does not need PhD in mathematics to calculate how many classes such a historian would have to teach to earn a decent living, or to realize that it is impossible for most adjuncts to function as research scholars or keep up with historical literature under these conditions," observed to Eric Foner, President of the American Historical Association and Professor of History at Columbia University."
