Founded in 1996 and located in the Presidio of San Francisco, the Archive has been receiving data donations from Alexa Internet and others. Internet SOCiety (ISOC)  "The Internet SOCiety (ISOC) is a professional membership society with more than 150 organizational and 6,000 individual members in over 100 countries. Media Metrix  "The Media Metrix product line includes syndicated audience measurement services, technology measurement, e-commerce measurement services, qualitative measurement and custom applications of the company's patented metering methodology."

Nua Internet Surveys  "Nua Internet Surveys is the authoritative source online for information on Internet demographics and trends. Its information reaches 180,000 people worldwide every week and has been translated into Russian, German, Greek, Portuguese, Italian, Hebrew and Spanish. Nua Internet Surveys is a database containing over three years of information gathered and collated by Nua. "

How Much Information?  "This study is an attempt to measure how much information is produced in the world each year. We look at several media and estimate yearly production, accumulated stock, rates of growth, and other variables of interest."

"The world produces between 1 and 2 exabytes of unique information per year, which is roughly 250 megabytes for every man, woman, and child on earth. An exabyte is a billion gigabytes, or 1018 bytes. Printed documents of all kinds comprise only .003% of the total. Magnetic storage is by far the largest medium for storing information and is the most rapidly growing, with shipped hard drive capacity doubling every year. Smart Computing: In Plain English   "Smart Computing is a monthly magazine devoted to helping users of all skill and experience levels improve their productivity with personal computers. The magazine, founded in 1990 as PC Novice, emphasizes tutorial articles and plain-English writing that defines technical terminology."  This site contains articles, tutorials, and answers to questions covering a wide range of  topics. (Internet, computers, software, hardware, etc).   This is another example of a very useful commercial site.

December Communications, Inc  " specializes in publications, presentations, and consulting related to the World Wide Web and Internet-based computer-mediated communication."

Chat 101, basic help for chatters, with abbreviations, emoticons, and etiquette / chatiquette  "Chat 101 contains the basics of chat, from the translation of chatspeak (moof, scrolling), abbreviations (lol, brb), and emoticons,  to the etiquette that  will help "newbies" get comfortable in this new world, be a welcome guest in the chatrooms, and, most importantly, get you more involved with the fun!"

ICQ - World's Largest Internet Online Communication Network   "ICQ is a revolutionary, user-friendly Internet tool that informs you who's on-line at any time and enables you to contact them at will. No longer will you search in vain for friends or associates on the Net. ICQ does the searching for you, alerting you in real time when they log on. The need to conduct a directory search each time you want to communicate with a specific person is eliminated."

Yahoo! Chat  This site contains hundreds of chat rooms.

Yahoo Internet Life is the online version of the magazine with articles and links to sites on the Web.

Some personal web sites sometimes have a "portal page" that contains frequently used links.  A good example of this is Personal Portal/Universal Home Page  created by the computer columnist John C. Dvorak.

Internet Scout Project  "Surf smarter, not longer. Let the Internet Scout Project show you the way to the best resources on the Internet--then you can choose what's best for you. Librarians and educators do the filtering for you, reading hundreds of announcements each week looking for the online resources most valuable to the education community. Finding Information on the Internet: A Tutorial  - UC Berkeley Library

Evaluating Web Sites for Educational Uses: Bibliography and Checklist  was compiled by: Carolyn Kotlas, MSLS, Institute for Academic Technology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.   "With millions of pages on the Web purporting to serve educational purposes, how do educators sort out the good from the bad, the useful ones from the time-wasters? Librarians and other information specialists share their expertise in evaluating Web information resources in the articles listed here. Included in this resource guide is a checklist of questions to ask when evaluating a Web site as a potential educational resource. More checklists are available in the articles cited."

"Testing the Surf: Criteria for Evaluating Internet Information Resources" by Alastair G. Smith,  The Public-Access Computer Systems Review 8, no. 3 (1997). (Refereed Article).   "This article will survey criteria that have been published on the Web and in the print literature and propose a set of criteria (a toolbox) that can be used by librarians and users to evaluate Internet information sources."
